Insemination

Insemination is the easiest and the least invasive method of assisted reproductive treatments. In this procedure, collected and “washed” sperm is inserted directly into a woman's uterus. The procedure is performed using a special thin tube called catheter where carefully selected sperm are placed, and then through vagina injected into the uterus. Insemination can be performed during natural cycle or the doctor may recommend stimulated insemination with fertility drugs included.

Types of insemination

  • INSEMINATION WITH HUSBAND/PARNTER's SPERM – a sperm sample required to insemination is produced at the Clinic on the day of the procedure, after 2-5 days of sexual abstinence. The sample is tested and prepared.
  • INSEMINATION WITH DONOR SPERM – if husband/partner's sperm does not qualify for insemination procedure (a low sperm count or poor sperm motility), donor sperm can be used. Donor sperm is obtained and tested at the Clinic.

When is insemination recommended?

  • unexplained infertility
  • cerival factor: anti-sperm antibodies in the cervical mucus
  • low sperm concentration or its poor quality
  • age
  • endometriosis

How is the procedure performed?

Step 1: Required tests:

Woman:

  • gynaecological examination
  • AMH, AFC, FSH, Estradiol
  • HSG (Hysterosalpingography)
  • Pap test
  • HBsAg, Anti-HCV, Anti-HIV
  • Chlamydia trachomatis
  • USR

Man:

  • semen analysis
  • HBsAg, Anti-HCV, Anti-HIV
  • Chlamydia trachomatis
  • USR

Step II: Ovarian stimulation

Ovarian stimulation is used to develop multiply mature eggs for fertilization. The doctor based on ultrasound examination monitors the number and the size of eggs.

Step III: Collect the husband/donor's sperm

The sperm sample should be collected at the day of insemination at Gyncentrum Clinic. 2-5 days sexual & alcohol abstinence is recommended before to increase volume and quality of the sample. Before insemination the sperm is "washed" and the most valuable cells are concentrated. The whole process takes about 40 minutes.

Step IV: Insemination procedure

The doctor uses a thin, long catheter (tube) to insert the concentrated sperm directly through the cervix into the uterus. The procedure takes about 15 minutes and is painless. Afterward the patient is able to go home.
